Down on the Farm - Family Outing to the Suffolk Punch Trust

Over the last few years we have been crabbing, boating, built sandcastles and visited Sutton Hoo. We had to come up with something new for two lively youngsters, aged 5 and 3 to do whilst staying with us near Woodbridge, but what?

We took them and their parents to the Suffolk Punch Trust in Hollesley (just 8 miles from Woodbridge and Orford).

"Without exception, we all had a fantastic day. We started with a tour of the exhibition. The children sat down in front of a film on Suffolk Punches presented by Paul Heiney. Felix loved the model tractors while Mia was fascinated by the bee keeping exhibition.

Outside hens wandered around the play area from where it was only a few steps to the goats, black pigs, rabbits and long haired guinea pigs. enclosures. There were also cattle and two delightful little Shetland ponies - Toffee and May in the stables. The children were not the only ones to adore them.

For me the Suffolk Punches were the real draw and we went to watch the horse harnessing demonstration which was followed by a training session for one of the 2 year old Suffolk Punch horses. Young Felix has a passion for tractors and the whole family enjoyed the tractor tour of the farm.  We repeated the tour on foot as Mia wanted to complete a quiz.

Whilst the adults enjoyed a coffee at an outside table the little ones raced around the climbing frame.

We went into the cafe to order lunch whilst the children moved into the art area to make finger puppets. A very nice light lunch can be had for around £5 and there is a good choice of children's meals to suit most tastes.

The afternoon included a further horse training session, small Pets feeding time and a milking demonstration.

An excellent day at the Suffolk Punch Trust for all the family.  The children enjoyed every minute of their four and a half hours there and so did the adults.  The horses are majestic, the pets unusual and rather sweet, the exhibition and demonstrations fascinating whether you know something or nothing about Suffolk Punch horses.  At just £15 for two adults and two children it is not an expensive day out and you really do learn a lot.

We are happy to say we HIGHLY RECOMMEND a day at the Suffolk Punch Trust."
