A brilliant day out in Suffolk doesn’t have to cost the world! Spending time with loved ones outdoors can be fun and is a great opportunity to create lasting memories. This Winter we are encouraging you to take a breath of fresh air and explore Suffolk by foot. From coastal exploring to countryside adventures, Suffolk has plenty of wonderful walks to offer.

Woodbridge is a quintessential riverside market town and is a delight to visit all year round. The town is full of rich history with plenty of places to enjoy excellent food and drink and indulge in a spot of shopping. To get the most out of your trip we recommend exploring this gem of a town by foot. We especially love the River Deben Walk. The 4 mile round route will take you along the River Deben among the sailing boats, with grazing marsh on your right and the estuary on your left.  This walk is ideal for the whole family as it isn’t too long and is mostly on riverside paths and town streets. While on your adventure why not take a closer look at The Tide Mill whose elegant white exterior dominates the quay.  The Mill has been there since the 12th century and was England’s last working tide mill when it finally stopped turning in 1957. The Tide Mill Museum is closed during the winter but it is still rather fantastic to admire from the outside.

Along the walk take in the fresh air and enjoy the stunning open landscape and wildlife of the Deben estuary which is part of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. At low tide you’ll see a glorious variety of wading birds, such as godwits and dunlins. For any keen birdwatchers, packing your binoculars on this walk is a must. At high tide admire the picturesque scenes of the river with the boats gently bobbing in the water. On the way back you have the opportunity to wander around the friendly town centre. The Thoroughfare is the main shopping street which has a lovely mixture of well known high street favourites and charming independent shops. The town also has many little winding lanes dotted with antique shops, galleries, and plenty of fine eateries. For a full itinerary and map click here.

Now, we don’t know about you but our favourite way to end a walk is to reward ourselves with a cup of tea and a tasty treat. Woodbridge is full of amazing places to dine out so you’ll truly be spoilt for choice. If you’re looking for a light bite we recommend Honey + Harvey which has a delicious range of sandwiches, soups, scones and, of course, plenty of sweet treats. If you finish your walk in time for dinner The Crown, famous for their delectable menu and welcoming atmosphere, is a definitely worth trying.
